Controls Engineer

Job Description

General Responsibilities:
Participate in the planning, budgeting, design, installation, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, database history management, performance evaluation, repair and maintenance of all instrument and electrical equipment in the plant; alteration and improvement of instrument and electrical equipment, machines, tools, buildings by Capital project.
Typical Duties:
  • Assist other technical team members in troubleshooting day-to-day plant problems
  • Coordinate plant preventive & predictive maintenance programs
  • Coordinate some technical activities in the areas of construction and equipment modification
  • Participate with Project Engineers to evaluate construction bids and outside vendor performance
  • Participate in design of new instruments and equipment
  • Assure compliance to appropriate Safety, Environmental, and Quality codes and standards (PSM, ISO, OSHA, NEC, etc.)
  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of experience or so in the chemical industry or a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in a chemical production operation (highly desirable)
  • Supervisory experience (highly desirable)
  • Team-oriented and disciplined

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Prompt, regular, and dependable attendance (as an essential function of this job).
  2. Engineer the use of facilities and equipment needed to maintain plant facilities.
  3. Act as the liaison between management and the work force to keep plant personnel informed, and maintain highest level of employee/employer relationships.
  4. Help develop an operating budget and initiate actions to operate within those fiscal plans.
  5. Maintain plant facilities in a manner of high quality, within the established budget.
  6. Coordinate efforts using approved procedures, for utilizing staff services to assist in proper maintenance of the plant facilities.
  7. Work with planners, maintenance technicians and clerks to ensure proper scheduled work flow.
  8. Execute responsibilities as appropriate, and authorize personnel to achieve maximum efficiency through proper use of skills, labor hours, machines and equipment.
  9. Establish and coordinate preventive maintenance activities and repair work in accordance with plant needs and objectives.
  10. Coordinate the work of the maintenance team with other departments, in analyzing and planning maintenance services.
  11. Work to reduce costs, improve maintenance quality and efficiency.
  12. Develop and maintain good working relationships with all other departments to ensure effective execution of responsibilities.
  13. Help prepare, propose, and control budgets; analyze and interpret variances from budget.
  14. Participate in personnel staffing interviews and hiring decisions.
  15. Provide leadership to other department personnel.
  16. Create a participative work environment by encouraging and facilitating employee involvement and teamwork.
  17. Ensure the proper use of safety devices, equipment and methods when maintenance efforts are performed.
  18. Help ensure adequate spare parts are available and they are of the proper quality to maintain the facility.
  19. Participate in management meetings to make recommendations in matters related to maintenance operations.
  20. Provide assistance in diagnosing, troubleshooting and proposing appropriate countermeasures when equipment malfunctions occur.
  21. Participate in general administrative and technical programs such as communications, staffing, employee training, employee relations, grievances, disciplinary actions, and cost reductions.
  22. Help maintain an appropriate headcount maintenance work force.
  23. Help develop and train employees to attain the required objectives.
  24. Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations issued by OSHA, EPA and other federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
  25. Help implement and control a goals and objectives program for the department.
  26. Provide accurate feedback to appropriate management personnel regarding employee relation problems.
  27. Other duties as assigned by management.


  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of experience or so in the chemical industry or a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in a chemical production operation (highly desirable)
  • Supervisory experience (highly desirable)
  • MCC power experience
  • Substations experience
  • VFDs experience
  • PLC and DCS knowledge
  • 480kv experience and up
  • PSM knowledge/experience strongly desired
