Job Summary and Line of Responsibility:
 
Works in the Clinical Laboratory, collecting, processing, and testing specimens submitted to the clinical laboratory. Responsible for reviewing and reporting results on specimens tested in the Clinical Laboratory. Performs quality assurance, and such maintenance as required, on instruments, testing material, and equipment. Ensures proper identification of patients, specimens, Health Care Providers orders, and other vital information. The Medical Laboratory Technician/Technologist reports to the Manager of the Clinical Laboratory.
 
Job Duties/Essential Functions:
 
* Performs routine and special laboratory tests.
* Performs such preventive maintenance, quality control, and calibrations on laboratory equipment as required or outlined in the manufacturer's recommendations.
* Performs "Proficiency Testing" as assigned by the Manager of the Clinical Laboratory.
* Performs instrument start up and cross over studies on new equipment as assigned by the Manager of the Clinical Laboratory.
* Monitors infection control for the hospital and performs infection control education as assigned by the Manager of the Clinical Laboratory.
* Monitors Laboratory Quality Control and daily maintenance of equipment and makes appropriate statistical adjustments to analyzers and QC Program.
* Recognizes, analyzes, and takes corrective action to resolve instrument/clinical problems. Identifies and evaluates patient test results that appear inconsistent with relevant criteria such as age, sex, diagnosis, and relationship with other test results available in the laboratory.
* Able to collect blood samples from patients. Properly labels tubes with name, date/time, and initials.
* Assists laboratory workers in the resolution of problems.
* Provides in-service training to laboratory personnel.
* Oversees performance of Phlebotomists, Lab Assistants I and II when the Manager of the Clinical Laboratory is unavailable.
* Informs Healthcare Provider or designee when "critical values" are met or exceeded in patient specimens.
* Maintains compliance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures as well as safety practices.
* Answers phone and delivers lab results when necessary.
* Keeps work area neat and clean; orders supplies when necessary
* Knows to use Personal Protective Equipment when indicated to adhere to all established safety rules.
* Meets dress code requirements. Wears clean, neat, comfortable clothing; no spandex, open toed shoes or blue jeans; scrubs OK. No strong personal fragrances.
* Additional time or overtime may be required during episodes of high patient census. On-call availability for weekends, evenings and nights may be required and may be regularly scheduled. While "on-call" it is required to report to the Clinical Laboratory within 30 minutes when called to work.
* Must show ability to meet cognitive/behavioral and physical demands/work environment requirements.
* Must be able to operate necessary equipment/tools and work within the physical hazards/working conditions of this position.
 
Educational Requirements/Qualifications:
 
* Baccalaureate degree or Associate degree which meets National Certification Exam requirements required
* Required to meet CLIA 88 requirements of 493.1489 of the Federal Register Vol. 57, No. 40
* Required to maintain certification(s) of MT, MLT and/or CLS
* Required to successfully complete National Certification Examination
* Required certifications must be kept current through continuing education. Documentation of re-certification must be presented to the Manager of the Clinical Laboratory and Human Resources
 
Operation of Equipment/Tools:
Ability to operate equipment, and tools necessary to complete laboratory bench procedures. Ability to troubleshoot, when necessary. Must have the skill or ability to manipulate syringes, needles and other equipment associated with the collection of blood specimens from individuals with safe technique. Is able to replace/repair equipment using instrument manuals or via tech support over the telephone.
